University Choral Ensembles Perform March 21
Wednesday, March 03, 2004
By Tiffany Johnson, PR InternWilmington, N.C. – The University of North Carolina at Wilmington will have a concert featuring both the University Concert Choir and the Chamber Singers at 8 p.m. Sunday, March 21 in Kenan Auditorium. Call Kenan Auditorium box office at 910/962-3500 for tickets.
Joe Hickman is the conductor, and Patricia Ainspac is the pianist. Hickman is the director of the University Concert Choir and Chamber Singers groups. The choir is comprised of 60-75 singers from the university and the community. The Chamber Singers are selected by audition. Both groups have toured extensively in Europe and the United States.
Zigeunerlieder (Gypsy Songs) by Johannes Brahms will feature pianist Pat Ainspac. These are all choral songs based on a form of Eastern European dance called the Czardas.
Prayers from the Ark by Carmen Bernos de Gasztold will be performed by the Chamber Singers unaccompanied. These madrigal-like pieces describe the Noah’s Ark experience in sequence from the point of view of Noah, the little bird, the cat, the mouse, the raven and the dove.
Poetry by Alfred Lord Tennyson has been set to music in Untraveled Worlds. The piece is written for a chorus and will feature an ensemble of piano, bass, drums, guitar and violin. Untraveled Worlds has shifting meters and a rhythm reminiscent of Riverdance. It is part of the program the choir will present at the installation of Chancellor DePaolo on April 16 and at concerts in Austria and Germany in May. It will feature student pianist Nancy Jones.
