RE: Installation Activities April 14-16, 2004
University of North Carolina at Wilmington
Many activities are underway as part of the installation of UNCW Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo, and I wanted to alert you to several items of interest to media.
During the academic showcase from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 14, on the Campus Commons (to the north of the University Union), and during the student showcase, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Thursday, April 15, on the Campus Commons, there will be water and soft drinks available for media in room 138 of the Warwick Center. Please stop by and have some refreshments while you are covering these events.
The George Mitchell Press Conference will be held at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, April 15, in room 138 of the Warwick Center. You are invited to attend that as well as cover the Mitchell talk Thursday evening. His talk is expected to begin about 7:30 p.m.
Installation will begin at 10 a.m., Friday, April 16, on the lawn of Hoggard Hall (rain site is Kenan Auditorium). Media parking will be in the visitor lot behind Alderman Hall. Bring your orange media passes or drive your company vehicle for admittance to the media lot.
There will be reserved media seating on a raised platform on the north side of the Hoggard Lawn. I am requesting that no media walk in front of the stage during the ceremony. However, you may cover the perimeter areas. Also, during the ceremony itself at the point when President Molly Broad and Judge Ernest Fullwood administer the oath of office to Chancellor DePaolo, I will escort still and television photographers to the front of the stage for photographs, then we will return to the media seating area to hear Chancellor DePaolo’s remarks. I am working on having a copy of her talk available to media during the talk. If I don’t get it in time, we will be posting it as soon as possible to our news Web site (UNCW.edu and click on What’s New @ UNCW).
You are invited to cover the installation ball Friday evening at Wagoner Hall, 6:30 reception, 7:30 dinner and brief remarks by UNCW Board of Trustee Chair Jeff Etheridge and Wilmington Mayor Spence Broadhurst. After dinner, Linda Nance, president of the Friends of UNCW (host of the ball), will give a toast to Chancellor DePaolo with response from her and Jeff Etheridge. I can’t offer dinner, but would welcome your coverage of this event.
Please contact me if you have any questions. For a full schedule of events, please see http://www.uncw.edu/chancellor/installation/schedule.html.
