RE: REMINDER—UNCW Commencement

9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 8, 2004

Just a reminder that the University of North Carolina at Wilmington will hold commencement exercises Saturday, May 8, in Trask Coliseum. Approximately 1,343 undergraduate and 198 graduate students will receive degrees.

Ceremonies for the professional schools (Cameron School of Business, Watson School of Education and the School of Nursing) will be at 9:30 a.m. Both ceremonies will be broadcast live in their entirety by UNCW Television over the Learning Network on Time Warner Cable channel 5 and Charter Cable 12.

Ceremonies for students in the College of Arts and Sciences will be at 1:30 p.m. U.S. Rep. Mike McIntyre will be receiving an honorary degree at this event.

Graduation Gala: 4 p.m. Friday, May 7, in the Warwick Center Ballroom, the Division of Student Affairs and the Office of Alumni Relations will sponsor a reception honoring the graduating class of 2004. Graduates, family members, faculty and staff are all invited to attend this event. This is an opportunity for the entire UNCW community to celebrate the achievements of the Class of 2004. During the reception, graduates who choose to participate will pledge to “explore and take into account the social and environmental consequences of any job he/she considers and will try to improve these aspects of any organization for which he/she works.” More than 25 public and private institutions have adopted this pledge, including Harvard University, the University of Kansas and Notre Dame.

Media are asked to park in the reserved parking places for media along the service road between the back of Trask/Hanover natatorium and the tennis courts. The service road is along the south side of the coliseum, but you will need to enter the service road from Hamilton Drive, which intersects with Hurst Drive at the stoplight. There will be signs directing the media to that parking area. If you are not in a media vehicle, please have a sign in your driver side window that says MEDIA in big letters. Please contact me if you have any questions.
