Statement to media from UNCW University Police Chief David Donaldson

4:30 p.m., Thursday, May 6, 2004

“I want to begin by thanking you for your patience in reporting the facts surrounding this complex tragic case. As you know, Jessica Faulkner, a UNCW sophomore student from Cary, was found dead in a room in Cornerstone Hall on Wednesday afternoon. Within 10 minutes of the UNCW Police Department receiving notification, we had a suspect, Curtis Timothy Dixon, a UNCW freshman from Charlotte, in custody. Later yesterday afternoon, after receiving assistance from the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Department, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and the District Attorney’s office, Mr. Dixon was officially charged with 1st degree murder.

“Additional information obtained from the investigation has warranted the need for us to file additional charges against Mr. Dixon of 1st degree rape, 1st degree sexual offense, and 1st degree kidnapping. This remains an ongoing investigation. Any further media queries should be referred to the DA’s office,” said Chief David Donaldson.
