UNCW Arts in Action performance series announces 2004-05 season lineup

Wilmington, N.C.—The University of North Carolina at Wilmington announces its 2004-05 Arts in Action Performance Series lineup. Scheduled October through April, the series will feature seven events with a broad spectrum of music, dance and theater. All performances are held at 8 p.m. in Kenan Auditorium unless otherwise noted.

The series opens Friday, October 15 with Aquila Theatre in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. Next, a co-presentation with Thalian Hall Center for the Performing Arts brings Putumayo’s Latinas: Women of Latin America to Thalian Hall on Wednesday, October 27. Then, Rani Arbo and daisy mayhem bring their mix of folk, swing, country and vintage pop to Kenan Auditorium Saturday, October 30. The band plays instruments ranging from fiddle and mandolin to ukulele, banjo and even a few jugs.

Fall events wrap up with Ronald K. Brown/Evidence Dance Company Friday, November 19 at Thalian Hall. The company’s movements are exquisitely sculpted and imbued with a sense of spiritual urgency.

The New Year opens with the Award-winning Marcus Roberts Trio. Jazz pianist Marcus Roberts leads bassist Roland Guerin and drummer Jason Marsalis in a tribute to North Carolina jazz greats John Coltrane and Thelonius Monk Saturday, January 29. The UNCW Jazz Ensembles will also be featured.

Mark O’Connor’s Appalachia Waltz Trio plays Americana music that borrows from folk and classical sounds Saturday, March 12. The trio will perform pieces O’Connor composed for the Grammy-winning Appalachian Journey, and Appalachia Waltz, recorded with cellist Yo-Yo Ma and double bassist Edgar Meyer.

The series finale is Rennie Harris Puremovement Saturday, April 9, dancing hip-hop with passion and soul. The pioneering choreographer and dance company will open audiences’ eyes to hip-hop that encompasses its roots as well as celebrates its recent iterations.

Mainstage subscriptions to the series will be available July 21 and include six events, all five at Kenan Auditorium and Ronald K. Brown/Evidence at Thalian Hall. Season tickets are priced at $31 for UNCW and area K-12 students; $72 for UNCW faculty/staff and senior citizens; and $93 for all others.

Individual tickets, on sale beginning August 23, are priced at $6 for UNCW and area K-12 students; $14 for UNCW faculty/staff and seniors; $18 for all others.
