UNCW lecturer’s latest book helps people through grief

WILMINGTON, N.C. — Practical advice on handling the loss of a loved one can be found in A Good Friend for Bad Times: Helping Others through Grief by Deborah Bowen, a lecturer in the Department of Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. The book will be released in September by Augsburg Books Publisher Company.

A Good Friend for Bad Times: Helping Others through Grief, co-written with Susan L. Strickler, offers useful information on dealing with the loss of a loved one as well as expressing sympathy to friends suffering from loss.

Bowen is a licensed clinical social worker who specializes in grief counseling, with an emphasis on helping elderly people and their caregivers. She holds a bachelor of arts degree in psychology and a masters in social work. Bowen leads students on service trips, co-hosts a radio program on Wilmington’sWHQR, “Magnolia Fatback Folk Hour” and acts in local theater productions.
