UNCW welcomes faculty researchers to the Million Dollar Club

Aug. 25, 2004WILMINGTON, N.C. - Eight UNCW faculty researchers were welcomed to the Million Dollar Club Tuesday, Aug. 24 for attaining cumulative external grant funding totaling $1 million or more during 2003-04.
For the past 10 years, there has been a significant increase in the amount of research being conducted by UNCW faculty and staff as well as the total number of external dollars coming to the university to support that work. During 2003-04 a record 251 proposals were submitted with 213 awards received, totaling $19,808,732. In addition, the Office of Sponsored Programs reports there has been an increase in inter-institutional and intra-institutional collaborations; more than 30 projects were interdisciplinary.
New Million Dollar Club members are:
• Steve Kinsey, biological sciences
• Bill Harris, earth sciences
• Alina Szmant, biological sciences and Center for Marine Science.
• Karen Wetherill, Watson School of Education
• Leslie Langer, Small Business and Technology Development Center
• Darwin Dennison, health and applied human services
• Ron Vetter, computer science
• Edna Collins, curricular studies, Watson School of Education.
Funding sources include the National Science Foundation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Undersea Research Center, UNC Office of the President, UNC University-Schools Programs, U.S. Small Business Administration, U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Department of Education, National Council of Teachers of Math, American Cancer Society and North Carolina Division of Child Development.
