Memoirist Santiago helps UNCW celebrate Hispanic Heritage with flair

WILMINGTON, N.C.—The University of North Carolina at Wilmington will hold a variety of events on campus to celebrate Hispanic Heritage month. Two student organizations, The Interested Ladies of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. and Mi Gente, will be co-sponsoring these events.

Author Esmeralda Santiago, whose visit is co-sponsored by the Office of Campus Diversity, is the author of the When I Was Puerto Rican, Almost a Woman, and newly-released The Turkish Lover. Santiago will address the university community at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 4 in Warwick Center Ballroom. The event is free and open to the public.

A screening and discussion of the film Frida, co-sponsored with the Center for Leadership Education and Service, is 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22 in Cameron Hall, Room 105.

From 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1 in Galloway Hall, the university will host a Fall Fiesta, co-sponsored by Housing and Residence Life. The event will be a display of cultural artifacts from South and Central America, an assortment of foods from various Latin countries and Hispanic music and dancers.

Hispanic professors, community leaders and business owners will join together for a panel discussion at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14 in the University Union, Room 100.

All events are free of charge and open to the public.
