RE: RAD Course for Female Media

Oct. 11-14, UNCW Executive Development Center

Northeast New Hanover Regional Library

With the serial rapist recently active in downtown Wilmington and as part of UNCW’s strengthened focus on campus safety, the University Police is offering a special Rape Awareness Defense (RAD) course for women working in media outlets.

The 12-hour course will take place from 8-11 a.m., Monday, Oct. 11 through Thursday, Oct. 14, at the Executive Development Center, Northeast New Hanover Regional Library, at the Landfall Shopping Center on Military Cutoff Road. There will be no charge for this course, and participants are encouraged to share safety tips and their experiences with viewers, listeners and readers.

Developed for women only, RAD is a course that has established standards of acceptability for female self-defense. It teaches tactics and techniques that are hands-on and realistic in nature. This course is taught by certified instructors and comes with a workbook and a lifetime membership in the RAD system.

RAD classes have been offered at UNCW since 1993. Five sessions are offered during fall semester 2004. The three sessions already completed drew record attendance, with 32 students participating. Ten students recently completed the course Sept. 26, and two more sessions are scheduled this fall. Special classes can be requested by interested groups.
