Sept. 28, 2004WILMINGTON, N.C.— The University of North Carolina at Wilmington Office of Campus Diversity welcomes Leif Mitchell, the second in a series of three speakers for the fall semester. Mitchell, author of Out on Fraternity Row: Personal Accounts of Gay Men in Fraternities, will address the campus community at 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 11 in Warwick Center Ballroom. Mitchell’s lecture is co-sponsored by the campus organization PRIDE (People Recognizing Individual Differences Exist).
In his multimedia presentation, "Gay, Greek and Proud," Mitchell will share his experiences of being “out” as a member of Beta Alpha Chapter of the Psi Upsilon Fraternity. He draws on his knowledge of gay and lesbian issues as they relate to students to provide audiences with concrete ways to make fraternities and sororities more inclusive of gay, lesbian and bisexual people.
Mitchell graduated from Miami University in May of 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and political science and a professional focus in political activism and sexuality education. Upon graduation, Mitchell moved to New York City, where he worked as the first intern for the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), the only national organization working to end anti-gay bias in K-12 schools. Mitchell works as the community educator/trainer and web coordinator for Planned Parenthood of Connecticut. Mitchell is also a member of the core staff for the North Atlantic Training Institute for Sexual Health Educators.
This event is free and open to the public. For more information on Mitchell, visit www.jodisolomonspeakers.com.
