Cherokee leader Wilma Mankiller visits UNCW

Oct. 22, 2004Wilmington, N.C.–The University of North Carolina Wilmington’s Office of Campus Diversity welcomes Cherokee leader and author Wilma Mankiller for a visit to UNCW to address the university and the surrounding community at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 8 in Warwick Center Ballroom. The visit will encourage the community to recognize the achievements, contributions and rich cultures of Native Americans. This event is free and open to the public.
The first woman to serve as Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, Mankiller compared her job to "running a small country and a medium-size corporation and being a social worker." Her goal is to help Native Americans solve their own social and economic problems. Ms. Mankiller has received numerous honors, including induction into the National Women’s Hall of Fame, the International Women’s Hall of Fame, and the Oklahoma Hall of Fame. She has 18 honorary doctorates, including one from all of Oklahoma’s universities as well as Yale, Dartmouth and Smith Colleges. She has authored numerous articles and books on women and Native Americans, including Mankiller: A Chief and Her People and her latest book Every Day is a Good Day.
