WILMINGTON, N.C.—Brian DeVido, a 2001 graduate of the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s graduate program in creative writing and a former Golden Gloves heavyweight champion, will read from his widely reviewed first novel about the boxing world, Every Time I Talk to Liston, at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15 at Bristol Books in Wilmington.

The event is free and open to the public. A wine and cheese reception will follow.

Every Time I Talk to Liston was published in May 2004 by Bloomsbury USA. The author’s Web site describes the story as follows:

A fighter on the decline, Amos “Scrap Iron” Fletcher, begins training a talented but troubled contender, TNT. Together, they go after one of the most honored titles in sports, the world heavyweight championship, with the defiant spirit of Sonny Liston guiding--and dogging--their every step.

The New York Times Book Review writes that "DeVido's writing shows quiet purpose in every move, carrying its insider knowledge with easy confidence."
