Wilmington, N.C. – The University of North Carolina Wilmington will be hosting Ronald K. Brown/Evidence Dance Company at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19 at the Thalian Hall Center for the Performing Arts. This is the fourth event of the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s seven-part Arts in Action Performance Series and is co-presented with Thalian Hall.

“Mr. Brown’s work speaks to so many important social and personal issues, such as the African-American journey, individual responsibility and family, that audiences talk after seeing his company perform,” said Shannon Hooker, assistant director for programs and marketing, University Union. “We are thrilled to have him and his dancers visit our community and offer interactive programs in addition to the performance.”

The performance will feature Brown’s “Come Ye,” a dance inspired by jazz singer and civil rights activist Nina Simone. A review from The New York Times described the piece as “Brown’s call to conquer fear, even through ‘revolution,’ and then live in peace.” Other works, “Upside Down” and “Grace,” are set to music by Nigerian musician and political activist Fela Kuti, Duke Ellington, Roy Davis Jr. and Oumou Sangare.

On Thursday, Nov. 18, Ronald K. Brown will conduct a text and movement workshop at DREAMS of Wilmington. He will work with twenty-five students to explore the tools, both verbal and physical, that assist in communicating through performance. Additionally, at 7 p.m. Nov. 18 in UNCW’s Warwick Center Ballroom, Brown will instruct a dance workshop. The workshop is free and open to the public. Attendees may observe or participate alongside UNCW students; due to capacity considerations, please pre-register by calling 910/962.7600 or e-mailing artsinaction@uncw.edu.
