UNCW hosts second annual French film festival

Oct. 20, 2004Wilmington, N.C. — The University of North Carolina Wilmington will be hosting the second series of Cinema Nouveau featuring five acclaimed and diverse French films. Each film will be shown in the Warwick Center Ballroom on the UNCW campus. All showings begin at 8 p.m. and are free and open to the public.
I’ll Sing For You from director Jacques Sarasin (Je chanterai pour toi) will be presented on Monday, Oct. 25. This documentary covers the life and music of a performer who inspired the people of Mali through turbulent political times.
Nickel and Dime, directed by Sam Karmann (A la petite semaine), will be shown on Saturday, Oct. 30. It is a film based on a true story about a petty crook who is released from prison and decides to go straight to realize his dream of becoming an actor.
Raja, from celebrated director Jacques Doillon, will be shown on Tuesday, Nov. 9. The movie deals with the improbable and controversial romance between a rich Frenchman and one of his young servant girls while living in contemporary Marrakech.
Monsieur N., showing on Tuesday, Nov. 16, was directed by Antoine de Caunes. Based on actual events, the movie recalls Napoleon’s final years, drawing a fascinating portrait of a key figure of the 19th century.
The final film, Strayed (Les Egarés) from director André Téchiné, will be presented on Monday, Nov. 29. The movie tells the story of a young widow in World War II France who flees Paris with her young children to escape the Nazis.
The film series is sponsored by the Department of Film Studies, the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures and the Office of International Programs at UNCW.
