Nov. 8, 2004WILMINGTON, N.C.— The University of North Carolina Wilmington’s women’s club lacrosse team announces that it is holding its first ever tournament, the Turkey Classic, starting at noon Saturday, Nov. 13 on the UNCW intramural fields on Riegel Road.
The first tournament hosted by the three year-old team will feature club teams from UNCW, East Carolina University, Wake Forest University and Methodist College of Fayetteville. The tournament is designed so all teams will have opportunity to compete against each other in 40 minute, seven versus seven scrimmages.
Between games, the women of the UNCW club lacrosse will challenge female spectators to test their speed on the fastest shot radar for a chance to win merchandise as well as the grand prize of a new lacrosse stick.
Senior Caitlin Jacocks, a UNCW communication studies major from Richmond, Va., organized the tournament for her senior leadership project. “Women’s lacrosse is new to the area of Wilmington, and not many girls are aware of the sport. Not only do I want to provide an opportunity for competition among area universities, I want to provide an opportunity for younger girls to learn more about the game of lacrosse. It is my hope that they will get excited about the sport and keep pushing for its implementation in the schools.”
