Wilmington, N.C. – As part of the ninth annual Artist Recital Series, faculty members of the Department of Music of the University of North Carolina Wilmington will perform at 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27 in Kenan Auditorium.

Richard Thomas (cello), Joby Brunjes (viola and violin) and Karen Rice (piano) perform three chamber pieces in a recital given as part of the Artist Recital Series. The chamber recital will include selections for violin, cello and piano. One of the pieces, Sonata in G Minor (The Devil’s Trill) by composer Giuseppe Tartini, will be familiar to many people as the inspiration for Charlie Daniel’s The Devil Went Down to Georgia. It is an exciting piece, which Tartini says came to him in a dream. The group will also perform Joaquin Nin’s Chants d’Espagne (Songs of Spain). Nin originally arranged this colorful Spanish folksong for the celebrated cellist Gasper Cassado. Finally, the trio will be joined by Rachel Brunjes (violin) to perform Robert Schumann’s Piano Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 47.

This concert is part of UNCW’s Department of Music 2005 Artist Recital Series which showcases visiting artist performers as well as UNCW artist faculty performers in a variety of recital settings from chamber music to solo performances. Proceeds from ticket sales benefit the University of North Carolina Wilmington and are used to support the Department of Music through scholarships for UNCW music students.

General admission for this show is $5. It is free to UNCW students with a valid I.D. Tickets will be available at Kenan Auditorium box office one hour prior to show time. For more information call the UNCW Department of Music at 910/962-7416.
