UNCW Step Show One Highlight of UNCW Homecoming 2005

Wilmington, N.C.—The University of North Carolina Wilmington presents Step Show from 8 to 10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4 in Hanover Gym as part of homecoming week events. Hip Hop comedian Jay Phillips will be the master of ceremonies for the competitions among the nine teams representing the “Divine Nine” sororities and fraternities.

This event is sponsored by the Association for Campus Entertainment (ACE), the National Pan-Hellenic Council and the African American Graduate Association. Tickets are $12 for general public and $10 for students and are available at the UNCW University Union Information Desk.

Other events during UNCW’s annual homecoming – Monday, Jan. 31 through Sunday, Feb. 6 – include a 50s Monday kicking the week off with a bonfire at 6 p.m. followed by fireworks at 8 p.m. at the intramural softball field gazebo. A DJ will play music from the 1950s. Toga Tuesday showcases Greek Olympics in front of Wagoner Dining Hall. The campus will conduct a blood drive from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Warwick Center Ballroom. Woodstock Wednesday will feature students dancing to a live band from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Hawk’s Nest. The men’s basketball team plays George Mason Wednesday at 7 p.m. and the women’s team takes on William and Mary at 7 p.m. Thursday. Both games are in Trask Coliseum.

In addition to the Step Show, Friday’s events include a parade from 2 to 4 p.m. that winds through campus from Lots S and T, along Price Drive and Hamilton Drive, ending in Lot K Extension. There will be viewing stands along the parade route, including on Hamilton Drive and at the Student Recreation Center. A competition for the best float will be judged and UNCW community and student organizations may participate. Call ACE at 910/962-3842 for more information.

Saturday’s events are the culmination of homecoming festivities with tailgating planned at 3 p.m. at the grassy area near parking Lot A and Eaton Plaza and the Homecoming game tip-off at 4 p.m. The men’s team competes against Old Dominion. The homecoming royalty will be crowned during the competition’s half-time. Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo will crown the king; Ed Vosnock, UNCW Alumni Association board chair, will present the queen.

On Sunday the women’s team closes the week of festivities with a game against Delaware at 2 p.m. in Trask Coliseum.
