Wilmington, N.C. – The University of North Carolina Wilmington celebrates Women’s History Month in March with a series of events.
The UNCW Counseling Center will host workshops March 13-20 on campus that reach out to sorority chapters and residence halls. The purpose of these events is to facilitate dialog about body image and to provide information about eating disorders. For additional information, contact Paulette Aasen at 910/962-3746.
Monday, March 7
8 p.m., Kenan Auditorium
The Vagina Monologues
Performed by UNCW students and faculty. Tickets are $5 for UNCW students and $8 for UNCW faculty, staff and the general public. Proceeds benefit Domestic Violence Shelter and Services Inc. A discussion session led by UNCW faculty Barbara Waxman, Karen Sandell and Kate Montweiler will follow the production.
Tuesday, March 15
7 p.m., Dobo Hall, Room 134
“Silence and Forgetting in the War: The Story of Noor”
Sorayya Khan gives the lecture and a reading, followed by a book signing and reception. For additional information, contact Cara Cilano, the Department of English, 910/962-7546. The Department of English and UNCW’s Women’s Resource Center are co-hosting this event.
Wednesday, March 16
7 p.m., King Auditorium
The Strength to Resist: Beyond Killing Us Softly
A panel discussion will follow the film. The event is organized by Paulette Aasen from the UNCW Counseling Center.
Thursday, March 17
7:30 p.m., King Auditorium
“Shocking Mom: American Girls in Historical Perspective”
Linda Scott, an associate professor of advertising and women’s studies and a research associate in the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois delivers the keynote address. A reception and book signing, for her book Fresh Lipstick: Redressing Fashion and Feminism, will follow the lecture. The Cameron School of Business is sponsoring the event.
Friday and Saturday, March 18-19
8 p.m., Kenan Auditorium
Women in Christianity: Uncovering Their Stories
The conference includes a lecture by the New Testament scholar Amy-Jill Levine, the screening of a documentary by Lou Buttino and additional lectures. The UNCW Women’s Resource Center is a co-sponsor of this event, which is organized by Diana Pasulka, the Department of Philosophy and Religion. “We’re Not the Jet Set-but How ’bout the Het Set? Sex, Gender and Class in Country Music”
Nadine Hubbs, a critic, historian and theorist of classical and popular music and a leader in the field of musical gender and sexuality studies is the speaker. Hubbs teaches music and women’s studies at the University of Michigan. A reception and book signing, for her book The Queer Composition of America’s Sound, will follow the lecture. The Office of Diversity and the Department of Music are co-hosting the reception.
Wednesday, March 30
6:30 p.m., Warwick Center Ballroom
A Take Back the Night Rally
Organized by the A-Team, a group of UNCW peer educators whose goal is to reduce the risk of sexual assault and sexual harassment. The march will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the rally will be at 7 p.m.
All events, except The Vagina Monologues, are free and open to the public.
