Four Fabulous Days of Flute

February 24, 2005Wilmington, N.C. – Under the guidance of Mary Jo White, University of North Carolina Wilmington professor of music, area high school flutists will participate in a three-day workshop culminating in a performance with the UNCW flute ensemble at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 13 in Kenan Hall.
The UNCW Department of Music is hosting high school flute choir and ensemble workshops from Thursday through Sunday, March 10-13. Participants will have rehearsals from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, two rehearsals from 10 a.m.–12 p.m. and 1:30–3:30 p.m. on Saturday, and then will give a performance at 3 p.m. on Sunday with the UNCW flute ensemble. During the workshop sessions, White will work with the students on breathing, tone, phrasing and rhythmic accuracy, as well as fun new music. Students will be assigned to trios and quartets for chamber music experience.
White, originally from North Carolina, returned to the area several years ago and is now the visiting assistant professor of flute and theory at UNCW and principal flutist of the Wilmington Symphony. White received a bachelor’s in flute performance from East Carolina University, a master’s in flute performance from Michigan State University and a doctorate in flute performance from Boston University. She was the principal flute for the Alma and Traverse City Symphonies in Michigan and second flute/piccolo for the Lansing Symphony.
