UNCW Artist Recital Series Performance

Wilmington, N.C.— Members of the University of North Carolina Wilmington music faculty will perform at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 6 in Kenan Auditorium. General admission is $5; free to UNCW students with a valid I.D.

Richard Thomas will perform on cello and Joby Brunjes, violin, and pianist Barry Salwen will collaborate with Thomas for this chamber music recital featuring German Classical and Romantic period piano trios. The program includes Franz Joseph Haydn's Piano Trio No. 43 in C Major, written for his 1797 visit to London, and Felix Mendelssohn’s ever-popular Piano Trio No. 1 in D Minor, Op. 49 written in 1839.

Thomas, a part-time faculty member at UNCW, is principal cellist of the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra, and during the summer is head of the string department at Camp Encore-Coda in Sweden, Maine. Thomas is a former member of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Colombia, (Bogotá, Colombia), the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and was on the faculties of the Universidad del Cauca and Universidad del Valle in Colombia and the Conservatorio Nacional in the Dominican Republic. In addition, he has served on the faculties of the University of South Carolina, Presbyterian Collage and the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities. Thomas studied cello at the Cleveland Institute of Music, De Pauw University, the University of North Texas and the University of South Carolina. His principal teachers include Alan Harris, Robert Jesselson, Robert Newkirk and Adolfo Odnoposoff. Thomas plays a 2004 Guadanini model Joseph Grubaugh & Sigrun Seifert cello.

Tickets are available one hour prior to the performance. Proceeds from ticket sales benefit the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and are used to support the Department of Music through scholarships for UNCW music students.
