UNCW Department of Music announces March concert calendar

Wilmington, N.C. - The Department of Music at University of North Carolina Wilmington will be hosting several performances March 2005. All events are free and are located in Kenan Auditorium on the campus of UNCW unless otherwise indicated.

8 p.m.
Student Saxophone Recital
Student Saxophone Recital will feature Franks Lane, senior at UNCW. Lane will “Pieces Caracteristiques en Forme de Suite, Op. 77,” by PM Dubois; “Suite No. 1 for Saxophone,” by J.S. Bach; and “Sonatina” by Lex Van Delden.
Sunday, March 13
3 p.m.
UNCW Flute Choir Recital
Flutists from high schools in the local area will join with the UNCW Flute Choir for a concert directed by Dr. Mary Jo White, assistant professor for the music department. This concert will be the conclusion of several days of workshops for the high school flutists held on the campus of UNCW every spring.
Tuesday, March 15
8 p.m.
Guest Artist Recital
The UNCW music department welcomes Dr. Peter Zambito (percussion) and Dr. Daniel Rice (trombone) for a Wilmington performance as part of their recital tour of the Mid-Atlantic States. Zambito is the assistant director of bands and drumline instructor at Concord University. Rice, a professor at Cape Fear Community College, is the principal trombonist fort the Wilmington Symphony. They will perform works for solo trombone, solo percussion and trombone including Dr. Zambito’s own “Athens Sonata.” Tickets for the general public are $5 and are free to UNCW with a valid I.D.

8 p.m.
Artist Recital Series
UNCW faculty Frank Bongiorno (saxophone) along with Karen Rice (piano), the UNCW String Quartet and Woodlind Quintet will perform a concert that will highlight three world premiere pieces for saxophone and chamber ensembles written by John McDonal, Shih-Hui Chen and Howard Frazin. Tickets for the general public are $5 and are free to UNCW with a valid I.D.

8 p.m.
Wilmington Symphony Orchestra
The Wilmington Symphony Orchestra’s Annual Benefit Concert,sponsored by Brightmore of Wilmington, will be at the Minnie Evans Performing Arts Center at Ashley High School, 555 Halyburton Memorial Parkway. This special Stage and Screen concert benefiting the WSO and its educational programs features music from Kramer vs Kramer, Master and Commander and Bernstein’s stirring score for On the Waterfront and other sparkling selections from the Broadway stage for this gala evening. Tickets are $30.

4 p.m.
Wilmington Symphony Orchestra
The Wilmington Symphony Orchestra will perform a free family concert. This program is especially designed with the young in mind. It is performed by the Wilmington Symphony and by the talented young musicians of their Youth Orchestra, now in its third season.
Tuesday, March 22
8 p.m.
Artist Recital Series
UNCW faculty Michael Waddell (clarinet) with Barry David Salwen (piano) and Robert Nathanson (guitar) will perform. Tickets for the general public are $5 and are free to UNCW with valid I.D.

2 p.m.
Performance Seminar
The Department of Music Performance Seminar is a recurring monthly event that features students enrolled in vocal and instrumental programs offered by the UNCW music department.
