Teacher Training in Music and Movement Education
Monday, June 06, 2005
WILMINGTON, NC – Daniel Johnson, assistant professor of music education at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, will offer three teacher-training sessions in music and movement education for music and elementary classroom teachers. These interactive and hands-on sessions are designed as professional development opportunities for educators with the ability to read music and an interest in teaching children. The music and movement sessions offered this summer are:
• “Orff-Schulwek Teacher Training Course, Level I,” June 20 – July 1,
• “An Introduction to Orff-Schulwerk,” July 11 – 15, and
• “Orff Extensions,” July 18 - 22.
Daily instruction includes interactive, hands-on activities based on creative and engaging music making. This approach uses literacy in the form of chants, rhymes and patterns to teach musical terms and concepts. Therefore, a portion of the workshop contact hours will be specifically designated as “reading credit” for teacher licensure renewal.
Johnson is a certified Orff teacher-trainer with 15 years of teaching experience including all levels, kindergarten-college. He will be assisted by Judy Lasko, a certified movement and music educator from New York City with 30 years of teaching experience. In addition, local guest artists will lead special topic sessions.
Registration for the workshops is required. For additional information, or for registration materials, please contact Johnson at 910-962-7559 or johnsond@uncw.edu.
