UNCW Names New Investigations Captain

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Gunnar E. Matthews has been named investigations captain for the University of North Carolina Wilmington Police Department. Capt. Matthews has been employed by the department since 1998, and has been assigned to the Investigations Division since January 2003.

Citing campus safety as his main priority, Matthews will work to provide outreach programs to students through interacting with campus programs such as CROSSROADS as well as community agencies such as Domestic Violence Shelter and Services. Matthews will also serve as a liaison with city and county judiciaries.

“Captain Matthews is a proven investigator and police manager with an outstanding record of partnering with community members, other law enforcement agencies, and an array of community services, repeatedly demonstrating his professional competence as well as his commitment to the university, the law enforcement profession, and justice in general,” said UNCW Chief of Police David Donaldson. “His promotion gives me great confidence in the police department’s ability to continue to provide extraordinary investigative services in response to community concerns.”

Matthews attended the North Carolina Justice Academy in Salemburg, NC. Prior to joining the UNCW Police Department Matthews was employed by the North Topsail Beach Police Department where he served as a patrol officer, investigator and ultimately the chief of police. In his 15 years of law enforcement experience, Capt. Matthews has received extensive training and experience, achieving the Criminal Investigators Certificate and the Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate.
