WILMINGTON, N.C. – George Syles received the 2005 UNCW Staff Award of Excellence at the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s 30th annual Service Awards Program.

The Staff Award of Excellence recognizes an employee whose service to the university exemplifies outstanding state service, innovation, public service, human relations or safety/heroism.

This year’s other nominees were Joyce Arnette, Toni Bellingrath, Jane Bullock, Cynthia Hucks, Kim Kelly, Jutta Lovas, Robb Mann, Catherine Morris, Diane Sledden Reed, Colon Roberts, Jr., and Carol Russell

Syles, campus services warehouse manager, has been with UNCW since 1991. On being honored, Syles says, “My being selected over all the qualified nominees was truly a surprise. Accepting the award is a wonderful feeling. I owe much thanks to the five guys who work with me, Mike Smith, Willie Verner, Henry Batts, Theodore (Pete) Bloodworth and Jeff Fullwood. Also a heartfelt thanks to Suzanne for nominating me.”

Nominated for the award by his supervisor Suzanne Helms, Syles was recognized for his “outstanding work ethic, exemplary integrity and personal dedication, commitment to excellent service, and uncanny ability to listen to the customer. Over and over, George has come up with innovations, tracking processes, and time efficiencies. Ever efficient, routes, truck packing, staff assignments, are all engineered to minimize the time between receiving a package and getting it into department hands, tracked, and without damage. George is attuned to the university’s pulse, calendar and activities.” For some years, George worked closely with the Eco Club. The last two years he has provided support for the Books for Africa program, assisting with the related temp storage, packing and shipping.

As this year’s recipient, Syles received $1,500 presented by the UNCW Board of Trustees, a reserved parking space for one year, three days of vacation leave, a presentation clock and a framed certificate. In addition, his name will be engraved on a plaque which is on display in the university’s administrative building, Alderman Hall. The recipient of the UNCW Staff Award of Excellence is nominated for the Governor’s Award of Excellence.

In addition to the Staff Award of Excellence, the university recognized employees who achieved five-year anniversary levels of state service and retiring employees.
