Opening Exhibit at Claude Howell Gallery Features Ceramic Sculpture

Wilmington, NC - The first exhibit of the 2005-2006 season at the Claude Howell Gallery at the University of North Carolina Wilmington opens with a public reception from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 1."Ceramic Sculpture," features works by UNCW students as well as Hiroshi Sueyoshi, Traudi Thornton, Gayle Tustin and Dina Wilde-Ramsing, seasoned ceramic artists from the Wilmington community.
The pieces are approached primarily as sculptures rather than as functional vessels. Art and Art History dept. chair Donald Furst says, “This exhibit is especially exciting because our students have the opportunity to display their initial efforts at ceramic sculpture alongside respected, established artists from the region.”
The reception is free and open to the public. Hours for the gallery, located in Kenan Hall, are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The exhibit runs through September 30.
Other exhibits planned for fall 2005 include, "The watercolor as a contemporary art form," curated by Professor Ann Conner, will run Oct. 4-31.
"Joanna Catalfo," a solo exhibition of drawings and paintings by new UNCW art faculty member Joanna Catalfo will run Nov. 3-21.
Senior Exhibit, a group exhibit by graduating seniors in Studio Art will run Nov. 28-Dec. 10.
