Students Step Out of Classroom, Into Careers: Project Protégé Kicks Off Fourth Year
Friday, September 23, 2005
WILMINGTON, N.C. – The UNCW Communication Studies Society student organization will host its fourth annual Project Protégé kickoff luncheon at 11:45 a.m. Friday, Sept. 30 at Sticky Fingers restaurant.Project Protégé, a mentoring program established in 2002, gives students the opportunity to network with communication professionals in the Wilmington area and to learn about careers in communication-related fields. This year’s program includes over 50 participants, representing the public relations, broadcast journalism, sales, print journalism, advertising and marketing fields.
“Project Protégé is an excellent opportunity for students to network in the community while learning more about their career of interest,” said Molly Seidler, Project Protégé student coordinator. “It allows students to see for themselves what options are available.”
The year-long program is unique in that the student and professional are given the flexibility to determine when and how often to meet in order to accommodate everyone’s busy schedules. Mentoring activities include job shadowing, resume critiques, career advice, and meetings over lunch.
The Communication Studies Society hosts the kickoff luncheon as a way to introduce the professionals and protégés for the first time. The luncheon is co-sponsored by the UNCW Department of Communication Studies.
