By Emily, Walsh, PR InternWilmington, NC - Three University of North Carolina Wilmington students were awarded scholarships by the Advertising Women of New York (AWNY) Foundation, a professional organization of over 1,100 women in the communications industries in the metropolitan area.
Melissa Freimark, Stephanie Worley, and Amanda Reese each were awarded $916.67 at a Sept. 20 ceremony in the University Union. This is the first time that UNCW students received this award. All three plan to attend the 49th Annual Advertising Career Conference to be Nov. 11 and 12 in New York City, where they will be recognized by AWNY.
The AWNY Foundation scholarship is offered to students majoring in advertising or who have expressed strong career interest in advertising and are majoring in a related field.
Freimark, from Chapel Hill, will graduate in May 2006 with a degree in marketing. She plans to pursue a Master of Business Administration degree. She enjoys snowboarding and going to the beach.
Worley, from Irvine, Ky., will graduate in May 2006 with a degree in communication studies. After graduation she plans to return to Kentucky and work in corporate public relations. She enjoys Pilates, reading, and scrap booking.
Reese, from Chester, Va., will graduate in the summer of 2006 with a degree in communication studies. She is considering careers in advertising or public and enjoys cycling and traveling. “I can’t tell the AWNY foundation how much this scholarship will help with tuition costs for next semester. It will allow me to spend more time on school and less time at work,” she said.
The Advertising Women of New York values well-prepared young professionals who enter the communication business. The AWNY Scholarship Award is one of the most prestigious awards in the advertising industry for students. Hana Noor Al-Deen, UNCW professor of communication studies and faculty advisor to the UNCW Advertising Chapter, says she was so thrilled to receive the scholarship check in the amount of $2,750 to be given to the students.
