UNCW Swings With Big Band Sounds

Monday, September 19, 2005

Wilmington, N.C. - Two University of North Carolina Wilmington jazz ensembles bring an evening of great music and entertainment at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30 in Kenan Auditorium. The UNCW Big Band swings with a variety of big band sounds, including “Swing, Inc.” by Les Sabina, and “On the Nightside” by Mike Tomaro.

The UNCW Saxtet is also featured on the program, performing music by Herbie Hancock (“Dolphin Dance”) and Thad Jones (“Sho’ Nuff”), among others, with a special guest appearance by current senior music student Camp Horton, trumpet. The saxtet is a unique new jazz ensemble composed of select UNCW music students, mainly jazz and performance majors, and consists of five saxophones, trumpet, and a rhythm section. Modeled after the well-known SuperSax groups of the 70s, the Saxtet is making its debut performance as a UNCW ensemble. The UNCW jazz ensembles are composed mainly of current students, both majors and non-majors in music. Both ensembles are led by music department chair Frank Bongiorno.

General admission is $5. Free to UNCW students with valid ID. Tickets are available at Kenan Auditorium Box Office one hour prior to the event.
