Melvin Peters to Give Lecture at UNCW

WILMINGTON, NC - Melvin Peters, associate professor of African American studies at Eastern Michigan University, will present “Rap Music and U.S. Global Image” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct.12 in King Hall auditorium. There is no charge for admission.

Peters teaches African American fiction, poetry, drama, folklore and music, as well as African literature, music, Caribbean poetry and music. His research focuses on African American jazz, rap and contemporary Diasporan poetry.

The lecture is sponsored by the Upperman African American Cultural Center at UNCW and the African American Heritage Foundation, which is dedicated to honoring the centuries of experiences of people of African origins in the Americas and especially in Southeastern North Carolina. The foundation is raising funds to create the Museum of African American History of the Lower Cape Fear by 2007.
