Homeland Security Symposium to Help Businesses Identify and Minimize Risk

WILMINGTON, NC - The University of North Carolina Wilmington is pleased to present an Executive Symposium on Homeland Security: Protecting Stakeholders and the Bottom Line on Feb. 3 and 4, 2006, at Sea Trail Conference Center in Sunset Beach, N.C. The event is targeted to leaders of large- and mid-sized corporations in North and South Carolina for the purpose of identifying risk exposure and providing resources to minimize risk. The symposium is sponsored by the North Carolina State Ports Authority.

Keynote speaker for the event will be Dr. Bruce Hoffman, corporate chair in counterterrorism and counterinsurgency, and director of the RAND Corporation Washington Office (http://www.rand.org/). He will speak during lunch from 12:10-1:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 3. Hoffman is an internationally recognized expert on domestic and international terrorism and insurgency. He will speak on “Terrorism: Critical Policy Issues.” Hoffman served as RAND's vice president for external affairs from 2001-2004. During the spring of 2004, he was senior adviser on counterterrorism to the Office of National Security Affairs, Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) in Baghdad. Recent projects include insurgency and counterinsurgency in Iraq and Al Qaeda, trends in terrorism and future potentialities. His latest book, Inside Terrorism, was published by Columbia University Press in the United States and by Orion Books in Britain. Foreign language editions have been published in 10 countries. Hoffman is often called to give congressional testimony on terrorism and is a regular contributor to the Atlantic Monthly. He is the author of “The Logic of Suicide Terrorism,” which appeared as the cover story in the June 2003 issue.

The lead speaker for the event will be Brendan Hewson, principal with Global Risk Advisory Services, a company that provides training on financial crime awareness, fraud prevention, money laundering prevention, and personal safety and security (http//www.gra-services.com/) He will speak at 8:10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 3, during continental breakfast. His topic will be "The History of Terrorism: A World Perspective." Hewson is a well-known and much requested speaker who presents on international financial crime at business and fraud conferences around the world. Prior to establishing Global Risk Advisory Services, Hewson was, for more than 10 years, the executive responsible for international corporate security for one of the largest global financial institutions. Prior to this, he was an officer with the Company Fraud Department, New Scotland Yard – London, where he was involved in the investigation of many high-profile cases, many of which were recognized by both the judiciary and other agencies.

Panelists representing the security and communications industry, banking, law enforcement, insurance, utilities, transportation, and information technology will deliver authoritative information and operational knowledge on a number of critical security issues. These include:
