Walker Named UNCW Assistant Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students

Wilmington, N.C. - Michael Walker has been appointed University of North Carolina Wilmington assistant vice chancellor and dean of students. He will oversee and promote the development of student life and have primary responsibility for programs that enhance the student learning experience including judicial programs, crisis intervention, Greek Affairs, commuter/non-traditional student programs, campus recreation, Center for Leadership Education & Service and University Union.He received a Bachelor of Arts in English/journalism education and a Master of Science in college student personnel from Western Illinois University, and an Ed.D. in higher education administration from The George Washington University.
Walker comes to UNCW from The George Washington University where he was the associate dean of students. He brings to UNCW over 12 years experience working in student affairs, residence life and residence hall expansion, community standards and leadership development, substance abuse prevention, and crisis planning and response. Walker was also an adjunct faculty member for the Graduate School of Education and Human Development at GW, where he taught student development theory for five years. He is currently an adjunct faculty member in the distance learning program, School of Education, at Drexel University.
In addition to working with faculty, staff and students on continuing to build a sense of community on campus, one of his initial goals is for students to see the Office of the Dean of Students as a front line resource for their needs and concerns. He wants to continue to offer the best in campus recreation and leadership development opportunities for students.
