Dogi-pots on the UNCW Campus

Monday, May 08, 2006

Wilmington, N.C. - Here's the scoop for dog walkers on the campus of University of North Carolina Wilmington - you can now leave home without it thanks to the newly installed dogi-pots. Members of the Pre-Veterinary Medical Association installed 6 dogi-pots, weather-resistant boxes containing waste bag dispensers for animal feces, around campus on May 7.

The Pre-Vet club serves students in veterinary medicine so they gain a better understanding of the profession and provides opportunities in the field. The group is comprised of 25 pre-med majors. Over the summer, members will check that the dispensers are stocked with bags. In the future, they plan to increase the number of dispensers on campus and in the community.

G. Robert Weedon DVM, MPH, senior partner at the College Road Animal Hospital in Wilmington, serves as the main faculty advisor for the group. Sara Waltz, a sophomore and publicity and fund-raising co-chair, sees the dogi-pots as a good way to get the club's name out and help the community at the same time. "The project has been both worthwhile and fun," she says.
