WILMINGTON, NC - Diane Talley, MarineQuest coordinator for the Division for Public Service and Continuing Studies, received the 2006 UNCW Staff Award of Excellence at the University of North Carolina Wilmington's annual Service Awards Program.

The award recognizes an employee whose service to the university exemplifies outstanding state service, innovation, public service, human relations or safety/heroism.

Nominated by chemistry Professor William Cooper, Talley was honored in the public service category. Cooper said he believes that throughout Talley's 25-year career, "she has had a bigger impact on the local and surrounding area through her many accomplishments than any other person at UNCW.

"Diane continues to have one goal, and that is to provide an endless amount of opportunities for the public to see what science is being conducted at UNCW and to try to educate them in environmental sustainability through awareness," Cooper said.

As this year's recipient, Talley received a $1,500 cash award presented by the UNCW Board of Trustees, a reserved parking space for one year, three days of vacation leave, a framed certificate, a, presentation clock and her name on perpetual plaque in Chancellor's Office in Alderman Hall. The recipient of the UNCW Staff Award of Excellence is nominated for the Governor's Award of Excellence.
