Wilmington, N.C- The University of North Carolina Wilmington's Honors Scholars Program welcomes 120 incoming freshman Honors Scholars into the four year-academic enrichment program. These students, who earned an average high school GPA of 3.9 and SAT (verbal and math) of 1300, have excelled in and out of the classroom. In high school, these students lettered as athletes, earned scouting distinctions, led school organizations, and volunteered in the community. With academic interests ranging from film studies to biology to nursing to education and to business, these Seahawk Scholars" come well seasoned for the opportunities at UNCW.

Upon completion of all university and honors requirements, these students may graduate with the highest academic honor bestowed upon any student at UNCW, University Honors and Honors in their major.

The Honors Scholars Program encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and independent work skills by offering exciting academic and cultural activities as well as the opportunity for close working and social relationships with the faculty. In their freshman and sophomore years, Honors Scholars take unique interdisciplinary honors seminars and honors sections of basic studies courses in addition to other university classes. In their junior and senior years, honors students propose and carry out an honors "capstone" project, learning to conduct a scholarly research project in the major, under the mentorship of a professor. Many of these projects lead to publications or presentations at professional conferences.
