UNCW to Offer In-depth Business SmARTS for the Arts Workshops

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Performing and visual artists, writers and filmmakers, are encouraged to attend a series of three-hour workshops, Business SmARTS for the Arts, that is being provided by the University of North Carolina Wilmington Division for Public Service and Continuing Studies. These workshops will feature UNCW experts who will share information and techniques to enhance artists' business skills. Session times and dates are as follows:

1. Copyright and Creative Works led by Robert Hoon, UNCW associate general counsel, 9 a.m. - noon, Saturday, Sept. 23
Topics covered: The copyright registration process; limits to copyright; how to prevent infringement on creative works; how to make transfers of creative works; how to protect creative works on the Internet.

2. Creativity: Thinking outside the Paradigm led by Robert Brown, UNCW professor of psychology, 9 a.m. - noon, Saturday, Oct. 21
Topics covered: Games and activities that trigger creativity.

3. Good Record Keeping for Artists led by Charles Earney, CPA, UNCW assistant professor of accountancy, 9 a.m.-noon, Saturday, Nov. 18
Topics covered: How to set up a good record keeping system; how to use business and legal forms; how to treat barters and trades in regard to taxes.

The workshops will take place at UNCW's Executive Development Center. The cost is $150 for the series or $65 per workshop. Pre-registration is required. Registration deadline for September workshop is Wednesday, Sept. 20.
