UNCW University Union Exhibit Series Hosts Joint Exhibit by Sally Bullers and Bambi Chappell

Friday, December 22, 2006

Wilmington, N.C. - University Union Exhibit Series hosts a joint exhibit featuring the watercolors of Sally Bullers and clay sculptures of Bambi Chappell. The works will be on display in the Warwick Center Lobby Gallery on the campus of University of North Carolina Wilmington Jan. 8 through Feb. 5, 2007.

An opening reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 12. Both the exhibit and reception are free and open to the public and sponsored by UNCW Presents.

Born in New Jersey, Bullers has lived in Pennsylvania, Colorado, Montana and now resides in Wilmington. While in Denver, she taught drawing and painting workshops. Her work has been exhibited in dozens of shows in our region and her work is in many local private collections and at Randall Library.

She says, "Having worked my way through realistic, to impressionistic, to abstract style, I have arrived at the work here displayed. These pieces have a firm grounding in the natural world. You will find organic, figurative and celestial and even some architectural references. My work has progressed from recording what I see, to expressing what I feel. It is important to me at this stage to try to portray my reactions to the world around me such as serenity, chaos, joy, excitement or the natural world order."

Chappell, a resident of Boiling Spring Lakes, N.C., began as an artist at age six, constructing horse hair necklaces. In the '90s, she worked closely with set decorators on various film sets. After years of working with watercolors and pastels, she has moved to two-dimensional expression through the use of sculpting.

She explains, "Using clay, I attempt to represent people, places and…imagination. Each piece is like a page torn from a picture book in my mind. Much of my work begins with slabs, coils or chunks of softy clay. As shapes and planes emerge and suggest forms, the story begins."
