MEDIA ADVISORY: UNCW Students Host Dance for Exceptional Students

Wednesday, April 18, 2007

Wilmington, N.C. - The Sixth Annual Spring Dance sponsored by the UNCW Student Council for Exceptional Students (SCEC) will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, April 20, in the Warwick Center Ballroom on the University of North Carolina Wilmington campus.

The UNCW student group hosts the event each year and invites approximately 150 middle and high school students and staff from Life Skills 2 classrooms in the New Hanover County Public Schools. Participants enjoy a fun day of dancing, socializing and refreshments with SCEC members and volunteers from other organizations.

"This is one of the activities our chapter sponsors to reach out to exceptional students and their teachers in the community," said Linda Mechling, a faculty member in the Watson School of Education and SCEC faculty adviser. "We want to support exceptional students, promote awareness of exceptionalities and foster understanding and acceptance within the community."

The UNCW Student Council for Exceptional Children (SCEC) is a student chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), an international professional organization.
