Public Service Announcement: Magazine Scam Alert
Tuesday, May 01, 2007
Wilmington, N.C. - Periodically, University of North Carolina Wilmington receives calls from members of the community about door-to-door salespeople misrepresenting themselves as UNCW students selling magazines or other items to earn scholarships. The purchasers are given authentic-looking receipts, but the products are either delivered inconsistently or not at all. UNCW student organizations DO NOT raise funds in such a manner. With the academic year rapidly coming to a close here in Wilmington and around the country, the season for such scams will soon be here. To alert the public BEFORE they become victimized, we would appreciate your using this message below as a public service announcement to alert the public
Several times a year, individuals posing as UNCW students canvass Wilmington neighborhoods, selling magazines or other items door-to-door, supposedly to raise funds for scholarships to enable them stay in school. UNCW is not involved in any such project and has not sanctioned any program that involves students going door-to-door selling magazines or other items.
