Tuesday, May 15, 2007
Wilmington, NC - The University of North Carolina Wilmington graduating class of 2007 has reached and exceeded its goal of $10,000 for this year's senior class gift. This year's gift will take the form of an 8' by 6' UNCW Seahawk (athletic) logo, and will be set as the centerpiece of a brick walkway connecting the Fisher Student Center and the newly renovated University Union. The graduating class selected this year's gift through online voting, which concluded in the fall semester of 2006.The Senior Class Gift Campaign is an established tradition at UNCW. Traditionally, each class selects and raises funds for its own gift, and formally presents the gift to the university at the spring commencement ceremony. Successful funding for the gift is the responsibility of the graduating class, and is completely dependent upon public donations.
Donors this year included students from all classes, faculty, staff, administration, university departments and student organizations. Donors will be recognized by having their names inscribed in a commemorative gift book in Randall Library, and many donors will have their names engraved in the bricks of the walkway surrounding the Seahawk logo.
"The gift serves as a lasting tribute to the years of hard work and dedication of the graduating class", says senior class president Christopher Bell. The construction of the gift is set to be completed with the re-opening of the University Union in the spring of 2008.
