Caldwell Honored with UNCW Staff Award of Excellence

WILMINGTON, NC - Rebecca Caldwell, Director of Substance Abuse and Violence Prevention & Education, CROSSROADS and Collaboration for Assault Response and Education (CARE) programs, received the 2007 UNCW Staff Award of Excellence at the University of North Carolina Wilmington's 32nd annual Service Awards program.

The award recognizes an employee whose contribution to the university exemplifies outstanding state service, innovation, public service, human relations or safety/heroism.

Aimee Hourigan, Assistant Director of CROSSROADS nominated Caldwell as an innovator for her "dynamic leadership and her ability to balance her dedication to research and student learning." Caldwell has been a member of the UNCW family since 2002. Under her exceptional leadership, CROSSROADS has developed into a nationally renowned substance abuse prevention program and earned more than $1.5 million in grant funds for prevention initiatives on campus and in the community. Additionally, Caldwell initiated the UNCW CARE program, which is "dedicated to intervening on a broad spectrum of violent behaviors, including sexual assault, relationship abuse, stalking and harassment."

"Rebecca is dedicated to implementing evidence-based programming on campus and building a safe and healthy campus environment She sets a standard for professionalism, loyalty and dedication to student learning that is exemplary," said Hourigan.

As this year's recipient, Caldwell received a $1,500 cash award presented by the UNCW Board of Trustees, a reserved parking space for one year, three days of vacation leave, a framed certificate, a presentation clock and her name on perpetual plaque in Chancellor's Office in Alderman Hall. The recipient of the UNCW Staff Award of Excellence is also nominated for the Governor's Award of Excellence.
