Media Advisory: Aug. 8 Celebration for 25 7th Graders Receiving Laptop, Mentorship from UNCW and GE
Thursday, August 07, 2008
Twenty-five rising 7th graders benefiting from a $50,000 Millennium Education Technology and Leadership (METAL) program grant from GE will be honored Aug. 8 at 2 p.m. in the UNC Wilmington Computer Information Systems Building.
The celebration ceremony is the culmination of the first week-long METAL Camp, developed to enhance computer skills and assist with the understanding of technology use in education, business and life. Seasoned GE professionals and UNCW faculty and staff guided learning experiences for participants, many of whom are determined to be the first in their family to attend college.
Each participating student will receive a personal Dell laptop and home Internet access for at least three years and will be paired with a mentor at the start of the fall school semester.
Photo opportunities and interviews with METAL Camp students and faculty are available.
