Thursday, January 29, 2009
In a failing economy, student access to the tools needed for success is growing with the opening of Binaries, a new University of North Carolina Wilmington technology retail and service store. The grand opening of Binaries, located in Fisher University Union (FUU) 1002, will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 2, 2009.In this unique IT service venue, the campus community can gain answers to basic technology questions while taking advantage of an environmentally friendly ink refill station. Computer-related accessories such as Gelaskins for iPods and iPhones, iPod armbands, assorted laptop skins, a wide assortment of headphones, and various computer devices can be purchased at the convenient location in the heart of campus. The facility will also house the Warranty Service Center where students who own computers through the Student Computer Initiative can have their laptops serviced.
Store tours and a ribbon cutting ceremony featuring Debra Saunders-White, vice chancellor of the UNC Wilmington Information Technology Systems Division (ITSD), will commence the grand opening. Dell and Apple representatives will be present with giveaways and answers to questions about their products.
Student Affairs polled students to learn what resources they wanted in the renovated FUU. Student expressed an interest in a tech store and the university provided it.
"We plan to use this store as a way to better engage parents and prospects, as well as obtain feedback on services that students may need," said Tara Thompson, ITSD student technology liaison.
