Nonprofit Renovated by UNC Wilmington Students in Honor of MLK

Thursday, January 15, 2009

As part of the national MLK Day Challenge, more than 25 students from the University of North Carolina Wilmington will give a facelift to the 1502 Castle Street location of Girls, Inc. from 9 to 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 19, 2009.

In celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s vision, UNC Wilmington students, including members of historically black organizations Delta Sigma Theta sorority and Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, will clean and paint facilities used to empower at-risk youth.

Girls, Inc. of Wilmington is a nonprofit program focused on inspiring young girls with mentorship, tutoring and prevention programs.

The renovation is a collaboration of the UNCW Campus Activities and Involvement Center, the Upperman African American Cultural Center, and the Center for Leadership Education Service supported by funding from the North Carolina Campus Compact service coalition.

Media are invited to interview event participants and capture students serving the community. The event will end prior to the Wilmington MLK Parade.
