National High School Science and Math Competition at UNC Wilmington Feb. 21
Thursday, February 19, 2009
The next generation of marine scientists, educators and policy makers for ocean sciences will compete in the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) at the University of North Carolina Wilmington on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009 from 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. on the first floor of Dobo Hall. Eighty high school students from across North Carolina will battle in a jeopardy-style game of math and science questions on a college level.
The NOSB is designed to challenge students to excel in areas of growing importance in our slumping world economy – science, technology and math – with a focus on exploring and developing strategies for oceans resource management.
The students, who will be rapidly answering questions, may become the world leaders who improve the environmental and economic well-being of our country in the near future. Participants will work in 14 teams facilitated by more than 65 UNC Wilmington faculty and educational leaders.
The winner of the North Carolina leg of the NOSB at UNCW, called the Blue Heron Bowl, will compete nationally in April. Since 1998, the NOSB has provided an educational forum for high school students to receive national recognition for soaring in the areas of math and science.
Media are invited to capture interactive visual and interview opportunities at the event.
