UNC Wilmington to Host Teachers of Tomorrow Day Feb. 20

Monday, February 16, 2009

The University of North Carolina Wilmington's Watson School of Education will host the first Teachers of Tomorrow Day from 9 a.m. to 2:15 p.m., Friday, Feb. 20. The event, presented in partnership with the North Carolina Association of Educators, is designed to encourage high school student interest in the teaching profession.

Approximately 80 high school students involved in the Teacher Cadet Program from Duplin, New Hanover and Onslow counties will participate. Teach Cadet is an innovative, honors-type curriculum for high school juniors and seniors, designed to promote a better understanding and create interest in those students who may consider teaching as a profession.

Program activities will provide cadets with the experience of being on campus, while learning about UNCW's admissions process, financial aid opportunities and scholarships. They will take a tour of the School of Education building, learn about UNCW programs from faculty members and attend professional development workshops. Program goals are to interest students in becoming teachers and to provide them with the experience of being a student on a university campus.

Workshops will provide the cadets with hands-on learning experiences, the opportunity to interact with students abroad through distance learning and ways to use gaming in the classroom.

Visual opportunities for the media are available between noon and 1:30 p.m., and interviews with faculty members and cadets are available upon request.
