UNC Wilmington to Host The Century Project Photo Exhibit March 2-6

Friday, February 27, 2009

The traveling photo exhibit The Century Project will be on display at the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s Warwick Center Ballroom March 2-6, 2009.

The Century Project, by photographer Frank Cordelle, is a series of nude photographic portraits of more than one hundred women. A diverse group of photographs, comprising women of many ages, shapes, sizes and life experiences is presented in the project. Most of the portraits are combined with highly personal written statements describing instances of rape, debilitating illness, disfiguring surgeries, distorted social expectations, as well as reflections of humor and joy.

The project has exhibited extensively around North America attended by creator Frank Cordelle and often accompanied by presentations and discussions of his work and the issues it raises. One of the project’s goals is to effect change in societal attitudes toward women’s bodies. Its method is to give voice to women through pictures and words, which project, among much else, courage, vulnerability, strength, diversity, multiplicity, and uniqueness.

The Century Project exhibit is free and open to the public. It will show at UNC Wilmington at the following dates and times:

Monday-Thursday, March 2-5: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Friday, March 6: Noon to 3 p.m.

A reception for the project will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, March 4, in the Warwick Center. The public is also invited to participate in a feminist colloquium to discuss many of the issues raised by the project from 5 to 6 p.m., Monday, March 2, on the second floor of Randall Library.
