Sustainability Week, Earth Day Paint UNC Wilmington Green April 19-25

Sustainability Week and Earth Day will be celebrated at the University of North Carolina Wilmington April 19-25, 2009. With a dumpster dig, a farmer’s market and a recycled fashion show, UNC Wilmington continues its dedication to maintaining an economically, environmentally and socially sustainable world through a week of fun educational activities.

On Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22, a Sustainability Fair will be held 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the UNCW Campus Commons amphitheatre. Campus and community organizations will encourage environmental responsibility with information and interactive activities including a dumpster dig exploring what should and should not be recycled. Soulful hip-hop group Blount Harvey will be performing.

6 p.m. Monday, April 20, Wagoner Dining Hall
Project Runway…Gone Green Sustainable Fashion Show:
Students will make and model their own “green” fashions with only newspaper, plastic, cardboard, scissors and tape.

7 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, Fisher Student Center, Lumina Theater
Planet in Peril: Part 2
: CNN anchor Anderson Cooper, CNN chief medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta and Animal Planet host Jeff Corwin take viewers around the globe in this documentary about the threats to the environment.

7 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, Computer Information Systems Building room 1008
Victor Zullo Memorial Lecture: David Fastovsky, world renowned paleontologist: Fastovsky, University of Rhode Island, will discuss the catastrophic extinction of non-bird dinosaurs 65 million years ago. He is the coauthor of the widely acclaimed college-level textbook, The Evolution and Extinction of the Dinosaurs.

11 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, April 23, Wagoner Dining Hall
Locally Inspired Lunch
: Campus Dining will prepare a lunch menu of food obtained from southeastern North Carolina producers/distributors in an effort to reduce the carbon impact on the food supply chain. Advance lunch tickets can be purchased for $7 at any campus dining location.

11 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, April 23, Campus Commons
Farmers Market
: An on-campus farmer’s market will have fresh local fruits, vegetables, herbs, meats and other products for purchase to support the local economy.

2-4 p.m., Friday April 24, starting at Wagoner Dining Hall
Kickin’ Some Campus Butts:
The campus will unite to clean up cigarette butts to protect the campus from the many toxins that can be released into storm water runoff.

6-8 p.m. Friday, April 24, Wagoner Dining Hall
Sustainability Bingo:
Students will learn about sustainability while having fun.

9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, April 24, starting at the Carolina Beach boardwalk pavilion
Surfrider Beach Sweep:
Students and community members will team up to clean up Carolina Beach. Food, music and a local art show will be available for volunteers to enjoy.
