UNC Wilmington's Ann Flack Boseman Gallery Announces 2009-10 Exhibition Calendar

The University of North Carolina Wilmington Ann Flack Boseman Gallery proudly announces its 2009-10 exhibition calendar. The shows cover a diverse collection of media including sculpture, costumes, sound, installation art, dioramas, as well as traditional media. The work of students, faculty, staff, alumni and distinguished visiting artists will grace the gallery walls. The exhibition season opens with world renowned child prodigy, George Pocheptsov in August. Exhibition dates and descriptions follow:
George Pocheptsov
Aug. 5 through Aug. 27; Reception - Wednesday, Aug. 19, 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Boseman Gallery (Fisher University Union, 2nd Floor)
Born in 1992 to Ukrainian parents, child prodigy and world renowned artist George Pocheptsov started to paint before he started to talk. Completely self taught, Pocheptsov is often compared to a young Picasso or Chagall, and his paintings sell for up to $100,000.
He has been commissioned to do paintings for Colin Powell, Celine Dion, Michael Jordan, Alan Ducasse, the Camera Museum in London and for the United Nations 60th Anniversary Show. The documentary about him, Brush with Destiny, won an Emmy. Most recently, he created the official commemorative art for the 62nd Annual North Carolina Azalea Festival.
The Importance of Being WILD
Aug. 31 through Oct. 2; Reception - Thursday, Sept. 3, 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Warwick Center Lobby Gallery
This exhibition is in conjunction with Women in Labor Daze (WILD), a celebration of motherhood with music, art, theater, comedy and more. Community and student artists will examine issues women face and the choices women make concerning motherhood.
Alumni Open Art Hang
Sept. 8, 2009 through Sept. 1, 2010
Warwick Center Lobby Gallery

From Kings to Cousins
Sept. 8 through Oct. 1; Reception - Wednesday, Sept. 9, 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Boseman Gallery (Fisher University Union, 2nd Floor)
Back by popular demand - Professor Mark Sorensen and his students return to the Boseman Gallery to exhibit their latest work ranging from the medieval period to the pre-Victorian era. The costumes were designed and constructed for the Department of Theatre's productions of King John and Our American Cousin.
Peering into Non-Fiction
Oct. 14 through Nov. 5; Reception - Wednesday, Oct. 14, 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Boseman Gallery (Fisher University Union, 2nd Floor)
The term "diorama" denotes a partially three-dimensional, full-size replica or scale model of a landscape, typically showing historical events, nature scenes or cityscapes, for purposes of education and/or entertainment. This exhibition brings the fall 2009 UNC Wilmington common reading selection, A Long Way Gone, 'memoirs of a boy soldier' to life through miniature scenes created by students.
Stella Duplass, Ann Flack Boseman Scholarship Show
Nov 13. through Dec. 13; Reception - Wednesday, Nov. 18, 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Boseman Gallery (Fisher University Union, 2nd Floor)
This student is selected annually by the faculty of the UNCW Department of Art & Art History. The scholarship is endowed through the generosity of Mark Griffis and Dave Robertson in honor of Ms. Boseman. The award, which is a merit-based honor, consists of $1,000 toward tuition as well as a solo exhibition.
Where the Lines Cross
Jan. 4 through Feb. 4; Reception - Wednesday, Jan. 20, 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Boseman Gallery (Fisher University Union, 2nd Floor)
Come see the Boseman Gallery transformed into a large-scale sculpture. Installation art describes an artistic genre of site-specific, three-dimensional works designed to transform the perception of a space. The basis of this installation is to break down barriers between fields of design and use aspects from each field to create a collaborative, site-based work. The artists involved in this installation are numerous student art majors and minors, collaborating with Art & Art History faculty members.
Making Waves
Feb. 15 through March 4; Reception - Wednesday, Feb. 17, 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Sound enjoys the realm of its very own artistic infrastructure beyond the confines of music. The concept has been propagated by artists globally, with the premise that the foundations of both sound art and contemporary art share a similar spirit of inquiry and experimentation. In this exhibition, students are given the opportunity to submit personally created, recorded and/or enhanced sound bites to be placed in a gallery setting.

March 24 through April 15; Reception - Wednesday, March 24, 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Boseman Gallery (Fisher University Union, 2nd Floor)
This show is our annual, juried exhibition, featuring works of UNC Wilmington students. Students traditionally submit over 100 works including drawings, watercolors, oils, photography, acrylics, ceramics, sculptures and experimental media. A UNC Wilmington alumnus/alumna is selected to juror the show and select the awards, including Best of Show, which is purchased for the University Union Permanent Art Collection.
Janette K. Hopper, Last Wild Places
April 7 through April 29; Reception - Thursday, April 8, 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Warwick Center Lobby Gallery
Hopper has a natural affinity for the skies, waters landscape of the American place. This exhibit features her artworks in a variety of media that show the close observation of those wild places that still exist both in Southeast and in the Western U.S. Hopper is a professor at the University of North Carolina Pembroke and recently joined the No Boundaries International Art Colony.
Sculpted Forms
April 21 through May 20; Reception - Wednesday, April 21, 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Boseman Gallery (Fisher University Union, 2nd Floor)
This show features a selection of work created by UNCW sculpture students. Fabricated, carved, cast and assembled forms designed and constructed using techniques developed in the beginning and intermediate sculpture classes will be showcased.
