Michael Shivar, president of Kinston Insurance Service Agency, Inc., has been named to the Board of Trustees of the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Appointed by the UNC Board of Governors, his term will expire in 2013.

A native of Kinston, N.C., Shivar is president of Kinston Insurance Service Agency, Inc. The agency provides a wide variety of insurance services to individual and corporate clients across the state. He has been associated with Bank of America and its predecessors through service on local or regional boards of directors for more than 20 years.

Shivar has a history of service to higher education. He was a member of the UNC Chapel Hill Board of Visitors from 2001-2005. He also has been an active member of the UNC Educational Foundation, serving two terms on its board of directors. Prior to his appointment to the Board of Trustees, he was serving his second term as a member of the UNCW Board of Visitors.

After graduating from Grainger High School, Shivar attended UNC Wilmington and received his B.S. degree in business administration from UNC Chapel Hill in 1973. He and his wife, Elizabeth, have one daughter, Ashley, who received her undergraduate degree at UNCW and is currently earning her Master of Fine Arts degree through the university's creative writing program.
