Media Advisory: 1,600 Volunteers Help Students Move into UNC Wilmington Aug. 15
Wednesday, August 12, 2009
More than 1,600 volunteers will help thousands of first-year students move into the University of North Carolina Wilmington, as part of the UNCWelcome 2009 Move-In celebration.WHEN: 8 a.m. - 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 15
WHERE: Media are requested to focus on Galloway Hall, Belk Hall, Graham and Hewlett Halls, along Riegel Road near Brooks Field Baseball Stadium. Media will also have access to the new Seahawk Crossing Suites, at the intersection of Cahill and Reynolds drives.
WHAT: As part of a longstanding tradition, volunteers from the university and community will line up in front of residence halls to lend a helping hand to new students and their parents. Volunteers will welcome them, answer questions and assist with the moving of students into their new rooms.
For the first time in UNC Wilmington history, more than 4,000 incoming and returning students will be housed on-campus, nearly double the number proceeding fall 2005. With the opening of the new 662 bed Seahawk Crossing Suites, UNCW will accommodate 40 percent of its students with on-campus living. National research has shown that residing on campus significantly increases a student's academic and social success.
Approximately 26 percent of the 2,000 members of the new UNCW freshman class were ranked in the top 10 of their graduating high school class. The bright group has an estimated GPA average of 3.77 and an estimated SAT average of 1168.
Media will have access to interviews with students, parents, volunteers and event organizers at Move-In.
